GTA VI launch prep guide: which edition, how much storage, and the gear worth buying

Standard vs Ultimate, the reported ~210GB PS5 download, why the 'physical' copy still needs a download, and the storage upgrades that actually work on PS5 and Xbox.

Grand Theft Auto VI arrives November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Before you hit pre-order, here's what's confirmed, what's still rumour, and what you might need to buy so launch night goes smoothly.

Standard or Ultimate?

Rockstar's prices: $79.99 for Standard and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. Per 2nd Shift, the Ultimate Edition is digital-only, so if you want a boxed copy, Standard is your pick. Compare what each edition includes on the PlayStation Store or Xbox Store before you choose.

Every purchase before November 20 gets the Vintage Vice City Pack. Digital pre-orders also get a month of GTA+. On PlayStation that membership keeps renewing at the regular price until you cancel, so set a reminder.

Physical vs digital

The boxed version contains a download code, not a disc, so either way you're downloading the whole game. Both go live for preloading on November 12. 2nd Shift also notes that PlayStation codes are tied to your account's country, while Xbox codes aren't region-locked.

How much space you'll need

Rockstar hasn't published an install size. The PlayStation Game Size account reported about 210GB on PS5 based on store data. Outlets like Game Rant and 2nd Shift stress that this is unofficial and could change. No Xbox figure has surfaced yet. Plan for 210GB plus room for a day-one patch. 2nd Shift estimates that on a 100Mbps connection, 210GB takes roughly five hours in ideal conditions, so start the preload early.

Storage upgrades that actually work

PS5: Sony's official requirements call for a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD between 250GB and 8TB, with 5,500MB/s or faster sequential read recommended. It also needs a heat-dissipation structure, like a heatsink. M.2 SATA drives aren't supported. A drive with a built-in heatsink is the easiest fit. Check its size against Sony's limits before buying.

Xbox Series X|S: to play Series X|S games from extra storage, you need an official Storage Expansion Card. A regular USB drive can store those games, but you'll have to move them back to internal storage to play.
